Umo Eno: A Man Who Dares to Lead Differently

_"Resources that would have been spent on political battles are now being channeled into impactful projects. These include sending Akwa Ibom children on educational exchange programme in the UK, building world-class schools and modern Primary Health Centres, feeding the less privileged, providing housing for the poor and junior civil servants, clearing outstanding pensions and gratuities, constructing more roads and bridges among others. By daring to lead differently, the Governor has been able to fulfill nearly all his campaign promises in the ARISE Agenda within just 15 months._

Yesterday, while tuning in to a lively radio discussion on one of the local stations, I heard two political analysts dissect the just-concluded Local Government elections in Akwa Ibom. One of the analysts, a seasoned journalist, highlighted a remarkable shift in leadership under Governor Umo Eno. He pointed out that Eno, unlike many of his co-travellers, has chosen a leadership path that is marked by inclusiveness and unity. According to him, this approach has not only been unusual but paradigm-shifting, and it was in that conversation that i coined the title; Governor Umo Eno dares to lead differently.

In our clime, political leadership is often defined by strict partisan lines, where the ruling party dominates, and the opposition is sidelined. But, since assuming office in 2023 as the fifth democratically elected Governor of the oil-rich State, Pastor Umo Eno has been rewriting and changing this narrative. His leadership style is anchored on unity, not division; a clear departure from the "winner-takes-all" approach that has long defined politics in our Country. This new chapter in the political history of Akwa Ibom has been embraced by many, including his fiercest critics, who now see the Clergyman as a leader that is driven by the collective good of the people, not party interests.

One of the analysts on the radio programme was quick to note that the Governor's style of leadership is a clear departure from the norm and that he has been able to win the hearts of the people because of his firm belief that governance should serve everyone, not just members of his party. He pointed out how the governor has consistently invited and hosted opposition members at state functions that were once reserved for the ruling party alone.

However, they may have overlooked another side of the Governor. The Ikot Ekpene Udo born cleric has dared to lead differently by attending events hosted by opposition party leaders, either personally or through representatives. This marks a significant shift from the past, where such camaraderie and engagement were rare. For Eno, once elections are over, governance begins, and every Akwa Ibomite, regardless of party affiliation, should feel the positive impact of his administration. This approach can only come from a leader who values unity over division.

Moreover, the Governor has proven his commitment to leading differently with how he managed the recent Local Government elections, which are often marked by high tension. By allowing opposition victories, he broke away from the usual dominance of the ruling party. What’s even more remarkable is that this election made history with no court cases following the process; something rarely seen, especially considering how heated such elections usually are.

It is refreshing to note that Pastor Umo Eno's inclusive approach has garnered widespread praise, with the most recent coming from the federal government. Just two days ago, the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, during a condolence visit to the Government House in Uyo after the passing of the First Lady, commended the Governor for fostering unity and building bridges instead of walls of division.

The Minister emphasized the Governor's role as a pillar of support for internal security and as a unifier who bridges various levels of government for the common good. In a commendation that perfectly captured the Umo Eno leadership style, Tunji-Ojo said: “...considering the fact that you're of the PDP extraction but you understand that regardless of party, we're Nigerians. I want to thank you for the spirit of unification, for deciding to be a bridge builder rather than a wall of demarcation.”

Political pundits believe the Governor's inclusive governance is a deliberate strategy. His belief that true progress is achieved when everyone is involved is reshaping our entire political system. His humility and commitment to making the office of the Governor more approachable for the sake of peace have resulted in tangible benefits, such as sustained peace and ongoing development.

Resources that would have been spent on political battles are now being channeled into impactful projects. These include sending Akwa Ibom children on educational exchange programme in the UK, building world-class schools and modern Primary Health Centres, feeding the less privileged, providing housing for the poor and junior civil servants, clearing outstanding pensions and gratuities, constructing more roads and bridges among others. By daring to lead differently, the Governor has been able to fulfill nearly all his campaign promises in the ARISE Agenda in just 15 months.

Looking ahead, if Governor Umo Eno continues on this path of bold leadership, the people of Akwa Ibom can anticipate even greater accomplishments than what has been promised. He is setting a new benchmark for leadership in the state, one that ensures every voice is heard and where governance truly serves the common good.

As Nelson Mandela wisely said, “What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.” Inspired by this philosophy, Governor Umo Bassey Eno is making a profound impact on the lives of Akwa Ibomites. His daring approach to leadership has fostered unity and inclusivity, ensuring every citizen feels valued and heard. Today, Akwa Ibom is thriving because its leader has chosen to lead differently.
