The Akwa Ibom Electricity Consumers Forum -AKECOF has once again raised a clarion call against the persistent manipulation, estimated overbilling, and fraudulent practices by the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHED), describing their actions as a calculated assault on consumers’ rights and public trust. It is disheartening that despite clear regulatory provisions by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), PHED continues to exploit consumers under the guise of Band A classification charging the premium tariff of ₦209.50/kWh without delivering the minimum 20 hours of daily power supply required by law. In Akwa Ibom State, particularly across Feeder 7 and other feeders, consumers have not enjoyed anywhere near this benchmark. Yet, bills keep rising while power remains irregular. This is to assure all and everyone that the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Muhammadu Buhari, is not, and was not at anytime in any form of danger arising, either from deadly infections or the reported incident by security personnel which is currently under investigation. The Governor of Kaduna State, Malam Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai’s convoy foiled attempted kidnapping of motorists along Kaduna-Abuja road on Wednesday afternoon. The Governor who was on his way to Abuja got to the Akilubu village around 3:40pm, sighted dozens of vehicles parked by citizens alarmed that kidnappers were ahead. Security operatives in the governor’s convoy advanced and cleared the road of the criminals who fled into the forest. After the clearing the road, Governor El-Rufai directed that travelers who had been wounded by the criminals be rushed to the nearest hospital. Udom Emmanuel has lost his battle against the Akwa Ibom Commissioner of police, Mr. Musa Kimo, as the IGP, Mr. Ibrahim Idris, has ruled out any plan to redeploy the CP. He has therefore advised the state government to stop harassing the CP and allow him do his work. The IGP was responding to a question on the Akwa Ibom State government sponsored protests against the CP. He expressed confidence in the capacity of the CP to do his job professionally. He dismissed the allegation that the CP is working with the APC allied forces in the state to rig the election in 2019.
