The Akwa Ibom Electricity Consumers Forum -AKECOF has once again raised a clarion call against the persistent manipulation, estimated overbilling, and fraudulent practices by the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHED), describing their actions as a calculated assault on consumers’ rights and public trust.
It is disheartening that despite clear regulatory provisions by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), PHED continues to exploit consumers under the guise of Band A classification charging the premium tariff of ₦209.50/kWh without delivering the minimum 20 hours of daily power supply required by law.
In Akwa Ibom State, particularly across Feeder 7 and other feeders, consumers have not enjoyed anywhere near this benchmark. Yet, bills keep rising while power remains irregular. This is fraud, and it must stop now.
AKECOF is closely monitoring PHED’s operations and keeping verified records of the actual hours of electricity supply across communities. We are already mobilizing consumers for lawful refunds and preparing to contest every case of inflated billing imposed under false supply claims.
Let it be clearly understood: we are watching, recording, and organizing. The Forum will not hesitate to lead a mass, peaceful protest should PHED persist in this deliberate oppression and abuse of consumers.
> “How do you justify billing Band A consumers at ₦209.50/kWh when you fail to provide even 15 hours of supply daily?
> Does the law not demand a minimum of 20 hours before such charges apply?
> We will not allow this injustice to continue.”
Light is Life —Let There Be Accountability
AKECOF urges all electricity consumers to take responsibility for monitoring their own consumption:
1. Get an Electricity Log Book.
2. Record your supply Band and daily hours of availability.
3. At month’s end, multiply the NERC-approved tariff by your actual supply hours.
4. That is the amount you should pay, nothing more.
We remind PHED that the Federal Government has approved free meters for every Nigerian home, and continued delay in implementing this directive constitutes both energy theft and economic exploitation.
AKECOF will stand by every consumer until justice, fairness and transparency define the power sector once more.
The days of silent suffering are over.
Enough of the deceit. Enough of the darkness. We are coming.
