It was a day of celebration and cultural splendour at Ikot Anung, Ituk Mbang in Uruan Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, as the community unanimously elected His Highness Dr. Edwin Effiong Asuquo as the new Family Head of the royal lineage of Nung EkanemAbasi Abiamkpo.
The event, which attracted traditional leaders, youths, women, and dignitaries from within and outside the community, was marked by tributes, traditional dances, and displays reflecting over three centuries of enduring royal heritage.
Speaking with journalists, the Secretary of Ituk Mbang Village Council, Chief Asuquo Edet Asuquo, described the emergence of Dr. Asuquo as divine and in line with tradition.
“What God has ordained must surely come to pass,” he said. “Today, God has chosen His Highness Dr. Edwin Effiong Asuquo to lead the people of Ikot Anung.”
He urged the new family head to rule with patience, wisdom, and forgiveness, promoting unity and peace among his people.
Similarly, the Family Head of Ituk Mbang Atai, Obong Etim Tom, commended Dr. Asuquo as a man of peace, unity, and progress, describing his selection as “a reflection of the people’s confidence and collective love.”
In his goodwill message, the Youth Leader of Ikot Anung, Akparawa Uko Edet Effiong, congratulated the new leader, pledging the youths’ total support to his administration.
“We believe in his leadership and pray for peace, development, and prosperity under his reign,” he said.
Other speakers, including Mr. Ezekiel Bassey Akpan, Chief Edem Essien, and Mr. Moses Effiong, prayed for wisdom, strength, and good health for the monarch.
The monarch’s sister, Adiagha Edet Eyo, also praised her brother for his humility and lifelong commitment to community service.
The ceremony climaxed with the official unveiling of His Highness Dr. Edwin Asuquo EkanemAbasi Abiamkpo as Family Head and the installation of Chief Okon Effiong Akpan (Utitoffiong) as his deputy, amid colourful traditional performances and cultural displays.
