PREPARING FOR IGBO EXIT BY DR AUSTIN ORETTE

When I write about thorny issues of Biafra, the proponents of Biafra always tell me my observation is one-sided. This makes me laugh. What have they been doing since the end of the war? They have been telling one sided stories. I can’t help it but laugh. What were they expecting from me? Were they expecting a love letter that extols their braggadocio? Were they expecting me to accept the lies and grandiosity of Mr Kanu? This is ridiculous.    Nigerians are beginning to counter the lies that the Biafrans have been telling their children. These people are emotionally disturbed that the only answer they have is emotional subterfuge that short circuits the observation that led to our present discontent. Telling me that they are angry does not become a corollary to the facts that created our present history.    Most things the current Biafrans say are not factual and they Know it and also stretch the truth that makes any third party and independent observer give th...

CAUSES OF ETHNIC CLASHES IN NORTHERN NIGERIA

BY DR AUSTIN ORETTE   There is no deliberate policy to kill Christians. The crisis in the North since the 40's, 50's, 60's, and 70’s and today is about land. The Hausa and other natives have the land and the Fulani people have no land.   The military throughout the past years tried to use government decrees to forcefully take land from the natives and give it to Fulani. One of those laws is the Land Use Decree authored by Olusegun Obasanjo.   Still, the natives resisted it. It is this struggle for land that led to various crises. The Fulani people are nomads. They used to be transient and seasonal visitors. Due to climate change and other modern issues, they now see the need for livestock settlements.  They have also become desperate.   Those using cow dung as manure for their farms are now hostile because the Fulani people are staying longer and beginning to have an attachment to the land that was not there. They tried very hard to use the military and t...

IBOM INTERNATIONAL HOTEL: FROM COMMONWASTE TO COMMONWEALTH

By Clement Warrie On Tuesday, October 21, 2025, after returning from the flag-off ceremony for the ARISE Youth Friendly Center in Nsit Ubium, I decided to make a brief stopover at the Tropicana Mall on Udoudoma Avenue to pick up some groceries. As I exited the mall, my ears were pricked by the sibilance of heavy construction work at the Ibom International Hotel, located less than 400 meters within the 82-hectares of the Tropicana complex.  Drawn by curiosity, I skirted around the mall to the construction site. It was a busy hive of industry, swarming with haulage trucks, day laborers, engineers, and safety professionals in reflective gear. And towering over it all was the gigantic 14-storey hotel building, wrapped in skeletal scaffolding. A few men as little as birds, perched on the steel framework, while a massive crane arched close to the building. For over 15 years, this 200-room, abandoned 14-storey hotel stood in infamy, with its massive grey concrete and sun-bleached ...

NATIONHOOD: THE NIGERIAN JOURNEY AND THE RULE OF LAW

BY DR AUSTIN ORETTE   It takes time to form a country. It takes patience and dedication to change attitudes. When people from disparate places and cultures are brought together to form a Nation, it is never easy. In the long run, the tears and toil are worth it because the interactions lead to expansion of consciousness which drives human progress.    The journey of nationhood is not for timid souls. It was never easy for countries like India, China   and the USA to rise. It is not an easy journey. These countries have more divisions and more ethnic and religious cleavages and groupings than we can ever imagine.    America conducted an election in the midst of war. Nigeria conducted elections by declaring curfews and turning cities to militarized zones.  These democracies we try to emulate did not give power to their military to intimidate their citizens.   Since the advent of our democracy, we have used the military as a law enforceme...
