The Deputy Governorship Candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom State, Dr. Amadu Attai, and the State Caucus Chairman of the party, Atuekong Don Etiebet, have declared that the APC has taken over Oruk Anam, the largest local government area in the state.
Both Oruk Anam politicians spoke on Friday during the APC campaign rally at the Oruk Anam Local Government Headquarters, Ikot Ibritam.
Dr. Attai said the APC had garnered so much strength in Oruk Anam because of the deputy governorship ticket given to the area.
He described his principal, Obong Nsima Ekere, as a good and truthful man and urged Oruk Anam people not to waver in their support for him.
Atuekong Etiebet said the sea of heads at the rally reflected the dominance of APC in the area.
He assured Obong Ekere, the APC Governorship Candidate, and other APC candidates of victory in the elections.
Addressing the rally, Obong Ekere said he was overwhelmed with the huge turnout for the rally which, according to him, cleared any doubt that the entire Oruk Anam was APC.
He said, as Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) for two years, he was able to execute emergency road repairs of Mercantile Bank Road, Ekparakwa, and Ekparakwa - Ekpene Ukpa Road.
Obong Ekere pledged to work with Dr. Attai, when they assume office, to correct the huge infrastructural deficit in Oruk Anam which is one of the local government areas he has designated as Special Development Areas.
He promised to work with the Federal Government to dualize the Abak - Ekparakwa - Ikot Abasi Road and the Ekparakwa - Azumini Road.
Senator Godswill Akpabio, a former Governor of the state, said Obong Ekere was set to transform the state, having acquitted himself at the NDDC.
"Nsima Ekere, in two years, has changed the fortunes of NDDC for good as Governor of nine states. He is tested and trusted," he said.
Senator Akpabio said it was imperative for Akwa Ibom to link again with the centre and to re-establish the traditional political relationship between Akwa Ibom State and the North.
The representative of Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District also spoke on the seeming inability of Mrs. Martha Emmanuel, the Governor's wife, to help her people in Oruk Anam.
"Is your daughter the First Lady of Akwa Ibom State? How many people are competing with your daughter? The women here don't know who is the First Lady. If your daughter was the First Lady, she would have empowered her people," he said.
Obong Emmanuel Ukoete, the representative of Ukanafun Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, said Oruk Anam, despite producing the Governor's wife, had nothing to show, not even the road in Mrs. Emmanuel's village.
"We are tired of this in-law issue. If our In-law has maltreated us like this, can't we try the son of the soil (Dr. Attai)?
Mr. Noah Noah, the APC House of Assembly Candidate, said Oruk Anam youths had taken a unanimous decision to support all APC candidates in the elections.
At the rally, Mr. Aniekan Williams, a former House of Assembly aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), led over 2,000 supporters to defect to the PDP.
He described the PDP as a party of deceit and thanked the APC for honouring Oruk Anam with the deputy governorship position and for maintaining the zoning of the House of Assembly position.
Receiving the defectors, Mr. Ini Okopido, the APC State Chairman, charged them to "use the broom to dismantle any broken umbrella."
He assured them of equal rights and privileges with old members.
