EKET, CRY NO MORE, UDOM'S DAYS ARE NUMBERED - EKERE

By Augustine Akpan

The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Obong Nsima Ekere, has charged Eket people to weep no more over Governor Udom Emmanuel's below par performance in the oil-rich city.

Empathizing with the people of the area over Gov Emmanuel's inability to complete any project he started in the area for almost four years now, Obong Ekere urged the people not to worry as the Awa-born banker turned politician “days in office as Governor are numbered”.

Decrying the spate of uncompleted road projects initiated by Gov Emmanuel three years ago dotting the length and breadth of the area, Ekere promised to change the narrative once he is sworn into office on May 29, 2019.

Reacting to the snail pace with which Gov Udom Emmanuel's government was pursuing road construction and remodeling projects in Eket, Obong  Ekere said he will commit the same energy and vigour that saw him start and complete numerous roads in the area within the period of two years he served as Managing Director, Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

“It is saddening that Atabong Road is less than 1 kilometer but yet Udom cannot complete it in four years.
“But in this same Eket, under my watch as NDDC MD, we started and completed roads in less than two years”, Obong Ekere posited.

Obong Ekere who sympathized with Eket people over the mess Gov Udom Emmanuel has made of the once beautiful city in the name of road construction promised to clear the mess as soon as he becomes the governor of the state.

Reacting to the poor construction work going on at Eket Township Stadium, the governorship hopeful expressed displeasure over what he described as “the rubbish going on in that place”.

He also disapproved Gov Udom's choice of demolishing the existing Stadium that was built in the area and awarding the contract to a company that uses wheelbarrow to construct the stadium.

Obong Ekere who noted that already, there's a big crack on the wall of the structure raised so far in the site, said as soon as he is sworn in on May 29, 2019, by June he'll “send a bulldozer to break down that rubbish and award the contract to a first class construction company to build a brand new stadium” that befits Eket people who he described as a people with taste and class.

“We'll correct all the mistakes Udom has made. We'll complete all the uncompleted roads that Udom has been unable to complete for almost four years now”, Obong Ekere assured.

He also assured Eket people that he will continue with the urban renewal project to restore the beauty of the oil-rich city.

He also seized the opportunity to unleash his blueprint for a prosperous Akwa Ibom to the people.

Amongst other lofty plans he has for Akwa Ibom people which he unleashed at the rally, he said his administration will restore payment of bursary to Akwa Ibom students which he said has been put on hold ever since Udom came on board as governor.

He said he'll not only restart payment of bursary but will increase it from N5,000 to N25,000.

Speaking further, Obong Ekere who alleged cornering of Local Government funds by Gov Udom Emmanuel, condemned such act and promised to restore local government autonomy to facilitate development in the grassroots.

He recalled that while serving as a Deputy Governor in the state, he had commissioned LG secretariats in Essien Udim and Etinan built and equipped by council chairmen and promised to make that possible again  by not tempering with funds meant for the third tier as it is the case with the present administration in the state.

Obong Ekere also assured the people of his government readiness to create wealth for the teeming unemployed via its programmes and policies as enshrined in his manifesto and urged them to make that happen by voting for him and all APC candidates in the February 16 and March 2nd polls.
