Rotary Club Uyo District sues for trees planting to safe environment

 




...As they mark 2020 tree planting 

As the environmental degradation keep on pushing mankind out of the environment, the Rotary Club Uyo District has embarked on Tree Planting tagged "let's support our environment through the tree planting project" as it curtail the erosion activities in Uyo metropolis,  Akwa Ibom State Capital.


Speaking with the press the Pathfinder President of Rotary Club Uyo, Mr. Offonbuk Nelson said human race must protect the environment by planting Trees especially area where erosion activities is much on the land for other organism to survive.



In his words, "we have been planting Trees on a yearly basis. But, Rotary Club International made it our core area of focus to plant trees every year. Like you have been aware of climate change, all of us must plant trees to protect the environment degradation," 


He commended Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project, NEWMAP for supporting 2020 tree planting program to help protect the environment from natural disasters.



In the same vein, Prof. Okon Ansa, Chairman Tree Planting Committee,  in his response, said the idea the program is for erosion control through tree planting. 



According to him added that, "tree planting the biological end of erosion control. You have engineering end which involves concrete design. But the biological end has to do with grassing, tree planting and that hold the soil together with the root of the tree.


Engr. Ifiok Ekot, Social Safeguard and Livelihood Officer of NEWMAP thanked Rotary Club Uyo District for a timely response to rescue land degradation in Akwa Ibom State. Adding that the major way to protect the land and even the Earth is tree planting.


He noted that the state has two natural challenge such as erosion and flood. As ways to restore the soil and earth is by planting trees. 


Highlight of the 2020 tree planting project was trees Planting at Evangel School, Uyo High School and inspection of World Bank Erosion control at Brooks Street  in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State Capital.
