It was a historic day of merrymaking and impact when the leading humanitarian service provider in this part of the world, the Okongko Charity Foundation, led by a Canadian-based scholar and astute businessman, Dr. Chris Okongko, played host to Akwa Ibom disabled community on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, at its office, 118 Atiku Abubakar Way, Uyo.
The annual event was yet another occasion the Foundation set aside to celebrate, fete, parley, and empower the SPECIAL PEOPLE drawn from the 31 local government areas of Akwa Ibom State, with business grants and special treats.
Historically, the Okongko Charity Foundation, in partnership with Redemption FM Radio Abak, has been organizing a special event not just to celebrate but also to encourage and empower people living with disabilities in the state. This year's edition came with a bang and fun memories.
Setting the tone for the event, the chief host and President of the Foundation, Dr. Christopher Okongko, highlighted that the goal of the Foundation is to bring hope to humanity, particularly those in dire need, such as the less privileged and people living with disabilities.
Dr. Okongko, who spoke from Canada through WhatsApp call, likened the mission and activities of the Foundation to the Great Commission of Jesus Christ, which is primarily to give hope to the disadvantaged and life to those enduring hardships. He mentioned that as a pro-needy and humanitarian organization, the Foundation takes delight in meeting the needs of people and communities through grants, scholarships, human capacity development, health care intervention, infrastructure, and rural development.
While praising government efforts at all levels, Dr. Okongko emphasized that his Foundation supports and complements these efforts by striving to serve humanity, to the glory of God.
He also commended Redemption Radio FM for its partnership, particularly for its fair and careful selection of the beneficiaries and for using its platform to promote humanity’s ideals across the world.
Earlier, the MD of Redemption FM - Abak, Comfort Umanah, expressed gratitude to Dr. Okongko for his dedicated service to humanity via his Foundation.
Describing Dr. Okongko as a man with a big heart filled with milk of kindness, the veteran broadcaster said the broadcast medium was excited to partner with the Foundation as part of its corporate social responsibility, to give a voice to those who need to listen and receive help.
She explained that the beneficiaries were chosen through a transparent process, where they simply called into the Redemption FM radio program and were then selected and empowered. MD Umanah, a retired Director in the Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Information, described the beneficiaries as the “VVIPs of the day,” deserving of the special treats.
On his part, the African Representative, Sir Daniel Ekanem, gave thanks to God for the grace given to its President to lead such humanitarian efforts.
He reeled out some programs and interventions the Foundation has carried out and encouraged the new beneficiaries to judiciously use the seed funds to grow their businesses.
He recounted how a trader who was earlier given similar support—a token of 100,000 (one hundred thousand) to start a small-scale business has today gotten 1,000,000 (one million) from the Foundation following her commitment and success in the business. He urged others to follow her example.
Main features of the event included business grant disbursement, motivational speeches, a fun party, and celebration.
