COMMUNIQUÉ ISSUED BY THE NIGERIA UNION OF JOURNALISTS, AKWA IBOM STATE COUNCIL, AT THE END OF HER CONGRESS ON FRIDAY, JANUARY 17, 2020

At the end of the Congress, which was well attended by members, the following decisions were reached.

1. A 3-man committee chaired by the Union's Secretary, Comrade Dominic Akpan, together with Comrade Kufre-Abasi Emmanuel and Comrade Anietie Esu was set up to conduct elections into the seven offices in Newsfront Chapel.

2. Congress ratified the decision to withdraw from the Health Insurance Scheme for Journalists sponsored by the Akwa Ibom State Government for now, pending the resolution of health issues covered in the Scheme by the insurance company, Akwa Ibom State Government and service provider - Premier Hospital.

3. Congress ratified the provisional approval granted Journalists in Inspiration FM and Radar Newspaper to form chapels and set a date for revalidation of credentials of  members of the proposed chapels by the State Working Committee.

4. Congress resolved to honour Comrade Roseline Etukudo,  chairman, Local Government Information Chapel, during the 2020 Press Week Award Ceremony coming up in December, for her exemplary leadership.

5. It was also resolved that the Constitution of the NUJ should be made available for members to buy so that they will be acquainted with the provisions of the Union's operating document.


6. Congress noted that the joke on Distinguished Senator John James Akpanudoedehe by the comedian during the 2019 Press Week Award Ceremony at Watbridge Hotel & Suites, Uyo, was in bad taste and the State Council has offered a deserving  apology to the Senator

7. That the Akwa Ibom State Government do emulate other States of the federation in fulfilling its promise to pay the N30,000 minimum wage to workers in the State.


8. Congress commended Akwa Ibom State Government for filling up potholes on roads in the State and urged contractors handling road projects to increase the volume of work
this dry season.

9. Congress decried the outrageous estimated bills issued to electricity consumers by the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHED) and urged it to fast track the process of acquiring metres by households, particularly the bill reconciliation item.

10. Congress appreciated Governor Udom Emmanuel for donating an official vehicle to the State Chairman, Comrade Amos Etuk and other support by the State Government to the Union.

11. Congress urged the State Council to make the NUJ Compendium available for members to encourage easy networking.

12. That Congress should restrict activities of chapels, especially when such programmes were being carried out by the State Council, to avoid repetition.
