The Honourable Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Offiong Offor, has inaugurated the Akwa Ibom State Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) vaccination team, charging members to carry out their duties with diligence and professionalism.
Speaking at the Ministry’s Conference Room, Offor said the exercise is aimed at strengthening livestock production through effective disease prevention, urging livestock farmers to fully embrace the programme.
She noted that the vaccination drive will improve animal health, reduce losses, and boost food sufficiency in the State.
The Commissioner appreciated Governor Umo Eno for his unwavering support for the agricultural sector, stressing that initiatives like the PPR vaccination will encourage farmers to invest more confidently in animal husbandry.
Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture, Dr. (Mrs.) Atim Okoko, recalled the vital role livestock once played in sustaining rural households, while commending the Commissioner’s commitment to protecting farmers from avoidable losses.
Earlier, the Director of Veterinary Services, Dr. Teddy Essien, disclosed that over 5,000 goats were vaccinated last year, expressing optimism that more would be achieved this year with all inputs in place.
The State Chairman of the Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association, Dr. Ekaette Augustine, and a member of the PPR team, Dr. Vincent Ekpo, applauded the initiative and pledged the team’s readiness to reach rural communities across the state.
The event was attended by Directors in the ministry and members of the PPR vaccination team.
