OPINION:
Akwa Ibom’s New Politics of Unity: A Turning Point We Must Protect
By Ifiokabasi Abia
For the first time in the political history of Akwa Ibom State, something profoundly different is taking root—an atmosphere of unity replacing years of quiet suspicion and ethnic fault lines. The familiar narrative of Ibibio versus Annang politics is gradually losing relevance, ступing ground to a broader, more mature consciousness: that Akwa Ibom’s future is indivisible.
This shift did not happen by accident. It is the product of deliberate leadership and a clear vision. Governor Pastor Umo Eno has distinguished himself not merely as an administrator, but as a unifier who understands that development cannot thrive where division is nurtured. His leadership style—calm, inclusive, and people-focused—has restored confidence across communities and rekindled a sense of shared ownership of the Akwa Ibom project.
What is emerging today is more than political harmony; it is social healing. Communities that once viewed governance through the narrow lens of ethnicity are beginning to see themselves as stakeholders in a common destiny. This is significant, because history consistently teaches that no society can achieve sustainable progress while fragmented along ethnic or sectional lines.
The strength of Akwa Ibom has always been its people—resourceful, peaceful, and resilient. When united, that strength becomes formidable. If the current momentum is sustained—if governance continues to be inclusive, if no group feels alienated, and if political actors resist the temptation to resurrect old divisions for personal gain—then Akwa Ibom will not only compete nationally, it will lead.
Unity is not a slogan; it is a daily choice. It requires restraint in rhetoric, fairness in policy, and sincerity in leadership. Governor Umo Eno’s approach has shown that it is possible to govern without stoking fear or exploiting differences. That example must be protected and strengthened by citizens, opinion leaders, and political stakeholders alike.
As conversations about the future inevitably arise, one truth should remain non-negotiable: Akwa Ibom moves forward best when it moves together. With sustained unity and steady leadership, the state is well positioned to consolidate its gains and chart a path toward lasting prosperity beyond 2027.
This moment is a turning point. It should not be wasted.
