A'Ibom Speaker assures Students of Govt's commitment to their welfare

 The Speaker of Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Barr Onofiok Luke has described Governor Udom Emmanuel as an education friendly Governor who is committed to the development of the education sector in the state. He says the Governor is doing his best in ensuring the provision of a conducive learning environment for students at the Akwa Ibom State University, the University of Uyo and other higher institutions in the state.

He stated this on Tuesday while receiving in audience, a joint session of student leaders including the Student Union executive and members of parliament from both the University of Uyo, and Akwa Ibom State University, AKSU, who were on a solidarity visit to the Speaker at the Assembly complex.

Barr. Luke informed the students that through the legislative intervention of House in the 2018 budget, some augmentation augmentation were effected under the social sector to accommodate the payment of bursary and scholarship to deserving Akwa Ibom students. Reacting to their request, the Speaker, who is a former SUG President of the University of Uyo, promised to discuss the matter with appropriate quarters.

"His Excellency, Governor Udom Emmanuel is committed to the development of the education sector. He is doing his best in providing a conducive learning environment in Akwa Ibom State University, Uniuyo, and others like the College of Education, College of Arts and Science".
"The legislature stands with you on your concerns in the area of bursary".

While congratulating the student leaders on their success at the polls, the Speaker admonished them to take their studies seriously, and cautioned them against making a huge mistake of sacrificing their studies on the alter of union activities. Making reference to relevant Bible verses, Barr . Luke who also enjoined them to imbibe the core values of honesty and transparency in their dealings, advised them against indulging in cultism and its related activities, maintaining that such acts are capable of destroying their future.

Speaking earlier, the President of the Student Union Government, University of Uyo, Comrade Duff Gabriel, the SUG President of Akwa Ibom State University, Ernest Godwin Udo, Senate President, Uniuyo Senate, Emediong Essien, Speaker, AKSU and the Chief Whip of AKSU House of Representatives, and the Chief Whip of AKSU, Comrade Bassey Victor in their separate speech, hailed Barr. Luke for always advancing the interest of the younger generation, saying they were excited at the Speaker's commitment to students and youths development.

They appealed to the state government to assist Akwa Ibom students in the area of bursary payment and scholarship grant.

Present during the courtesy visit were some members of the House of Assembly including, the Deputy Speaker, Mrs. Felicia Bassey, member for Ika/Etim-Ekpo State constituency, Rt. Hon. Gabriel Toby, member for Etinan, Hon. Aniefiok Dennis, member for Ikot Abasi/Eastern-Obolo, Hon Uduak Ududo, and Uruan State constituency representative in the House of Assembly, Hon. Aniekan Bassey.
