A Senior lecturer in the Department of Communication Arts, University of Uyo and Political Communication expert, Dr. Nsikak Idiong is to deliver a lecture during the 2018 Press Freedom Day on Friday 4th May holding at the Press Centre of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Information Drive, Uyo.
This more was revealed by the Chairman of the NUJ, Elder Patrick Albert while interacting with newsmen in his office recently.
The theme of this year's Press Freedom Day is: "Keeping Power in Check: Media, Justice and the Rule of Law".
According to Elder Albert, other discussants billed to attend the occasion are Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Charles Udoh; PDP Publicity Secretary, Barr. Ini Ememobong; Chairman House Committee on Information and Member, Ibiono Ibom State Constituency, Barr. Ime Okon; state Commissioner of Police; Director of DSS, among others.
Also expected at the event is the Member representing Abak Federal Constituency in the Lower Chamber of the National Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emman Ekon who is billed to chair the occasion while the keynote speaker will be the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Charles Udoh.
The NUJ boss noted that the invitation extended to the Police Commissioner and Director of DSS is propelled by the fact that they are key players in the physical aspect of power.
"These are arms that are relevant to the management of the physical aspect of power. They are the enforcers of power so they need to be taken along on those critical areas that will promote democracy and serve as enabler to effective media practice."
The two-term NUJ Chairman who was flanked by the Secretary of the Union, Comrade Amos Etuk and Secretary of the World Press Freedom Day Planning Committee, Comrade Edidiong Udobia, assured that the event will be colourful, rich and rewarding.
On the impact the Press Day Celebration will have on journalists, Elder Albert noted that it'll help media professionals know how they are valued. "It'll equally help journalists reflect and put them in check as far as media practice is concerned," he stated.
Speaking further, he said: "It'll help put us in check to know those critical areas that make us vulnerable. That's why we have invited the Police and DSS so that they can understand that as much as they have a duty to carry out, we also have a duty. The emphasis is to let us know that we are all working for the same society."
The United Nations General Assembly declared May 3rd to be World Press Freedom Day or just Press Day to raise awareness of the importance of freedom of the Press, but the day can also be marked on the 4th in countries due to exigencies.
