In a bid to curb the high rate of road traffic and illegal parking within Uyo Metropolis, Udom Traffic Intervention Team in partnership with the Nigerian Police Force, State Traffic Command on Thursday moved to warn, sensitize and create awareness to motorist and other road users on their plans to arrest and persecute defaulters which will commerce on Monday.
Led by the progenitor of Udom Traffic Intervention Team and immediate past Vice Chairman of Uyo Local Government Council, Otuekong Hon. Ukai Udeme Emmanuel and flanked by DSP Enemuwe Godson, the officer in charge of Traffic Command gave the warning notice to motorist at Ikot Ekpene, Udi Street, Abak Road, Ekpiri Nsukara Junction as well as Osongama by Udo Udoma traffic light.
Speaking with newsmen, Hon. Ukai Udeme Emmanuel, The progenitor of Udom Traffic Intervention Team expressed dissatisfaction and displeasure over the overzealousness and high recklessness of motorist who indulge in illegal parking, touting and carrying of passengers in the middle of the road said those actions has caused gridlocks, accidents and scratching of people's car.
"It's believed that every road user is a victim of traffic congestion in Uyo arising from unnecessary parking and touting which we have received several reports and this move will totally eradicate
"Ignorance they say is never an excuse of the law", hence, the government of Governor Udom Emmanuel is very passionate and committed towards the welfare of his people most particularly the lives of properties, however, arrest and persecution of all defaulters of the new rule will commence on Monday and would be charged to court". He said.
According to DSP Enemuwe Godson, the officer in charge Traffic Command of the Nigerian Police stated that a patrol team responsible for the operations of traffic will be deployed to ensure full compliance from motorist effective from Monday 26th April, 2021.
Also speaking, Rt. Hon. Uno Etim Uno, the Honourable Commissioner for Transportation and Solid Minerals commended Hon. Ukai Udeme Emmanuel for the positive move taken in collaboration with the Nigerian Police Force to put an end to this road menace which has been in existence for some years now while reiterating the support and cooperation of the Ministry and that of the State Government to contain the alarming rate of road traffic and to enhance zero traffic within and outside the Uyo Metropolitan city.
