The impact of the all expense scholarship scheme facilitated by Senator representing Akwa Ibom North East, Obong Bassey Albert, for students of the Senatorial District, is beginning to be felt, as two of the scholars from the first batch of the programme, recently graduated with first class honours, while 39 others bagged various degrees.
The report as published in the annual appraisal of the scheme by its organizers in November, indicates that eighteen of the scholars graduated with second class upper degrees, while four obtained second class lower degrees. Four of the scholars also completed their medical programs, while three were recently inducted as Pharmacist by the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria.
Wisdom Ibokette, an indigene of Etinan, currently on National Youth Service assignment in Kebbi State, and Ememobong Akpanekpo from Uyo, were two of the beneficiaries, who bagged first class honours, from the University of Uyo, with CGPA of 4.7 and 4.52 from the Department of Civil and Computer Engineering respectively.
The benefactor, Senator Bassey Albert, while responding to why he decided to float the programme, said he sees the scheme as a social contract with his people, hinting that the second phase, which is to be launched soon, will be massive and capture more students who could not make it in the first batch.
The Senate Committee Chairman on Gas, added that the programme was established to boost academic performance of the beneficiaries, and motivate them to be focused. He charged the graduating scholars to be good ambassadors of the Senatorial District and wished them well in their future endeavours.
No fewer than 1,600 applied for the scholarship test, which 81secured the pass mark, in a credible process, witnessed by all the candidates, early 2016. The 81 scholars spread across the nine LGAs of the Senatorial District. The beneficiaries are entitled to full tuition fees and stipend of ten thousand naira per semester.
