ANI ASIKPO'S LAUGHABLE VERDICT

ANI ASIKPO'S LAUGHABLE VERDICT

Ani Asikpo who hails from Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State is an interesting specimen in the study of election failure. Outside Abraham Lincoln who became the 16th President of the United States of America (1861-1865), who had the enviable record of losing all the 8 elections he contested for and only winning the last being the presidency, Asikpo is a recurring name in the practice of contesting election as he is always on the ballot during any election season and posting failure all such times. However the difference between him and Lincoln is why the latter finally won election as President of the United States and became very famous, Asikpo does not appear set to win any election in his life; not with his rapid retreat into ignominy owing to his garrulity.

This morning, Asikpo was guest to one of the most unpopular government programmes on radio, Akwa Ibom Mandate, anchored by the unprofessional Sampson Akpan but with thanks to the proficient Mr Slow Ice who recently always comes to the rescue to enliven and give the programme direction. Mr Asikpo today dwelt on the politics of Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District and Akwa Ibom State; the People's Democratic Party and Governor Udom Emmanuel as the candidate.

I am interested in his analysis of the senatorial election of Akwa Ibom North West Senatorial District. The contending forces in that election are the former governor and serving senator, His Excellency, Senator Godswill Akpabio and former deputy governor, His Excellency, Obong(Dr.) Chris Ekpenyong. Both are notable sons of the senatorial district. But while one used his office to cultivate goodwill and build enormous human resource, the other squandered every goodwill through irascible behaviour and made more enemies through his inability to manage the opportunities of that office. He left that office on a sour note with his boss.

When Ani Asikpo who boasted that he has a super structure that he would surrender to complement Ekpenyong's equally super structure, I suspected that immodestly targeted at feathering his economic nest was at play. I also noticed some kind of illusory self importance aimed at shoring up his dimming political value for a commensurate financial returns from the governor who has become an emergency cheerful giver and the candidate.

The most curious and interesting part was Asikpo's attempt to convince listeners that Ekpenyong would defeat Akpabio in the forthcoming senatorial election billed for February 16. Prodded to give insight into how this would happen, Asikpo morphed into the outworn rehash that Akwa Ibom is PDP but those who made her so are long gone. The Etiebets, the Udoedeghes, the Akpabios, the Jackson Devos, the Maurice Ebongs etc. These were the people who made Akwa Ibom PDP through its formation until it became entrenched in the State.

It is obvious to even the naive that Ekpenyong can not beat Akpabio in the coming election. Ekpenyong knows this much. Asikpo was at the studio to justify his earning that now seems to be coming from the State Government. He is today a regular voice on the radio literally defending government as if he is a media- aide. Governor Udom administration has recently engaged a flurry of them, some ill equipped rabble rousers whose lack of discretion allow them to behave as loose cannons. They are always on radio to freely throw tantrums at people and earn a living. That is today's brand of politics according to the political gospel of Udom Emmanuel with the Ekefres, Asikpos and Udoma Ekarikas leading the charge.

Sampson hails from Akwa Ibom State.
