New Year shocker for Gov Udom Emmanuel: Another appointee resigns, defects to APC
The year 2019 has begun on a bad note for Akwa Ibom State Governor Udom Emmanuel as another appointee of his government, Dr Friday Antai has resigned and defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Dr Antai resigned as Executive Director of Akwa Ibom Investment Corporation (AKICORP) in a letter dated December 27, 2018 and released online on January 1, 2019.
In the letter, Dr Antai said he was resigning from the position he was appointed on March 20, 2017 to "pursue other goals in life."
Meanwhile, Dr Antai has joined the APC in his ward in Okobo Local Government Area and arrangements are in top gear for his formal reception into the party.
Dr. Antai, a pastor, served as the Board Chairman of Akwa Ibom Rural Water and Sanitation Agency (AKRUWATSAN) and Chairman of the Governing Council of the Akwa Ibom State College of Education, Afaha Nsit, in the government of former Governor Victor Attah.
Before establishing his own company, he had worked as Head of Operations at Ocean and Oil (now Oando) company and Deputy Head of Operations at Intels Nigeria.
Governor Emmanuel has suffered mass resignations from his government in recent months by aides, mostly citing poor working conditions and the Governor's lack of electoral value.
The aides that have resigned are Barr Chris Okorie, Special Assistant on Electoral Matters, Elder Ibanga Etang, Special Assistant on Project Monitoring, Pastor Abasiandikan Nkono, Special Assistant on Projects, Barr Utibe Idem, Special Assistant on Projects, Mr Anietie Ebe, Special Assistant on Project Monitoring, Barr Mfon Udeme, Special Assistant on Electoral Matters, Mr Joe Iniodu, Special Assistant on Media, Dr Idorenyin Esikot, Special Assistant on Small and Medium Scale Enterprises, Dr. Anthony Usoro, Senior Special Assistant on Demographic Planning, Mr Godswill Ekpenyong, Special Assistant on Projects and Mr Derek Tower Umoh, Special Assistant on Projects.
Two commissioners, Mr Victor Antai and Barr Ibanga Akpabio and a member of the Judiciary Service Commission, Barr Bassey Dan-Abia Jnr also resigned and defected to the APC from the PDP.
Addressing a press conference in October, last year, Barr. Udeme predicted that nearly all Governor Emmanuel's over 200 aides will resign before the elections.
He was shot and critically wounded in the leg the following day in a failed assassination attempt on him in his house in Uyo.
