AKSG RATES VISUALLY IMPAIRED PERSONS HIGH

The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Dr. Glory Edet has celebrated the ability and success achieved by visually impaired persons in Akwa Ibom State on their contribution in education, law, journalism and many other professional achievements made by blind persons in the state.

Dr. Edet made this known at the 2018 White Cane Safety Day Celebration held in  Uyo this week with the theme: " The White Cane - Our Tool of inclusion".

In her words, "the White Cane  day celebration is intended to make our people fully aware of the significance of the White Cane and the need for motorists to exercise special care for the blind who carries White Cane. We celebrate the achievements by  blind people in a sighted world as well as honor the many contributions being made by the blind and visually impaired persons.

"This year is significance as Akwa Ibom State can boost of highly educated visually impaired persons in different fields of endeavors. This year theme is apt and timely as the mission of the day to educate the general populace about blindness and how the blind and visually impaired persons can live, move, work independently while giving back to their communities, Dr. Edet mentioned.

She maintained that White Cane in our society is a mobility tool and a symbol of a blind person's ability to walk independently. Adding that, it is also use by visually impaired persons enhance the users' ability to conquer the mobility challenge as it makes people show special consideration to the blind on our streets and highways.

Edet assured them of the state government inclusion in the scheme of things. Adding that, they should not see the post of sight as the end of their productive lives, indecent begging on the streets and other unlawful activities but key into the Dakkada philosophy of Gov. Udom Emmanuel and make use of the enabling environment and the inherent resources created by AKSG to improve themselves and their dreams.

The Chairman, National Association of the Blind, Mr. Ubong Udo thanked government for support, protecting their interest and providing the visually impaired persons with White Cane and assured AKSG for more collaboration in the nearest future.

He call on government to create more opportunities for the blind people to improve their living standard and to be financially independent.

Highlight of the event was music rendition by visually impaired persons and presentation of White Cane.
