STOP RIDICULING THE LEGISLATURE, HON. EKON WARNS AKWA IBOM STATE GOVERNMENT

The All Progressive Congress (APC) candidate for Abak/Etim Ekpo/Ika Federal Constituency of Akwa Ibom State, Hon. Emmanuel Ekon has cautioned parliamentarians against being used as pawns by the executive to ridicule the legislative institutions in the country.

The lawmaker issued the warning while reacting to the crisis that has engulfed the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly following the declaration of the seats of five members vacant for defecting from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC.

He expressed shock that Hon. Onofiok Luke the Speaker who is a lawyer could unilaterally declare the seat of his colleagues vacant under the pretense of obeying a court order describing his action as the most unwarranted in the face of the prevailing political situation in the state.

According to him, Hon. Luke should have waited for the legislators to exhaust all the legal options available to them before embarking on what he called a scripted jamboree that has thrown the entire state into chaos.

The two terms Federal Lawmaker and Chairman Committee on Local Content wondered Why the embattled Speaker was hasty in his action if he was not coerced by the executive to declare the other seats vacant when it was only Hon. Idongesit Ituen that the court judgment affected.

The Abak/Etim Ekpo/Ika Federal Constituency representative decried the executive interference in an independent arm of government pointing out that unless he was armed twisted into ridiculing the legislature, he had other windows at his disposal to proffer a solution to the court judgment to protect the sanctity and integrity of the judiciary in the state.

“As far as the law is concerned, Hon. Onofiok Luke goofed when he declared the other four seats vacant. He would have applied wisdom as a Lawyer in the handling of the matter. Declaring the seat of his colleagues vacant under the guise of obeying a court order was uncalled for. This is a clear case of executive interference in the affairs of the legislature and it is unacceptable in any democratic setting,” he said. Adding that in some states and even at the federal level, legislators have defected from one party to the other and no seat has been declared vacant.

He disclosed that it was one of the strategies deployed by the PDP to harass and intimidate the opposition which has made a remarkable impact to take over the state in next year’s election.

While charging APC members and supporters to remain resolute, he assured them that no amount of intimidation and the use of state apparatus would change the psyche of the people from voting the underperforming PDP administration out of office.
