Women To Enjoy 40 Percent Participation in Govt, Says DA Deputy Gov. Candidate
Deputy governorship candidate of Democratic Alternative Party (DA), Mrs. Ann Ukpong, has said that Akwa Ibom women will be fully integrated into the mainstream government under the leadership of the party.
Mrs. Ukpong said women will enjoy 40 percent of appointments in the administration of Mr. Johnson Attah if the party succeeds in next year's election.
Ann who hails from Uyo Senatorial district stated this on Monday shortly after touching down at the Victor Attah International Airport in Uyo where she was received by a jubilant crowd of supporters.
Mrs. Ukpong maintained that women have laboured in the field of politics for years without commensurate reward, noting that the incoming government of Democratic Alternative Party will accord women the respect and reward they deserve.
Reeling out other plans her party has in store for women, she said: "Our party has come to empower Akwa Ibom women through grants and interest free loans. Starting from polling units to villages, to wards and to local government levels. Again, Pregnant women will be receiving free prenatal and antenatal care. Elderly women and widows from 50 years will receive special attention. It's only DA that can do these."
She urged Akwa Ibomites to vote massively for DA in 2019, stressing that the party has a lot to offer the people from agriculture to job creation, massive investment in education, human capital development and lots more. She said her party will revamp the agricultural sector in order to reduce the over dependence on oil.
Ukpong who was full of smile as she fielded questions from newsmen, said she was overjoyed by the massive crowd that welcomed her at the airport. She noted that it was a sign that the party is loved by the people.
Her words: "It's a joy to behold our people abandoning various engagements; work, market, farm and others, to accord me this rousing welcome. Let me quickly divulge that I was avoiding this razzmatazz that is why I did everything to make sure nobody had knowledge about my arrival. It therefore means that if I had announced, this airport would not contain our people. So, first, I thank them for going extra miles to get the information and most importantly I thank them for this show of love and solidarity."
Describing the governorship candidate of the party as a talented young man full of fresh ideas, she said the party has what it takes to assume leadership of the state, adding that the people of Akwa Ibom have already taken their stand on who they want. According to her, the result of the governorship election will shock many people.
She called on the people to stand by Democratic Alternative Party, maintaining that the party has their interest at heart. Comparing the candidate of the party, Attah with the President of France, Emmanuel Macron, she said the world is in need of young and vibrant leaders, noting that in Mr. Johnson Attah, Akwa Ibom people can be sure of governance with a difference.
"With our peoples support, we can elect a youth to lead our state for the first time. A youth that understands how it feels to be hungry. A youth that has seen it all and comes out to sincerely help our people. A youth that will develop the entire 31 LGAs of the state and would not be cowed by any godfather. Akwa Ibomites, that's my message for you," she submitted.
While commending the media community on the role they are playing within and outside the state especially in the projection of her party, she said Democratic Alternative Party will build a befitting Secretariat for journalists in the state to complement their work, adding that as the watchdog of the society and fourth arm of government, journalists have a big role to play for the development of the state.
