Sen Akpabio: Why They Vouch For Him
His vision has direction

By Joseph Ekpo, Uyo.

Leadership, according to John Sculley, revolves around vision, ideas, direction, and has more to do with inspiring people as to direction and goals than with day-to-day implementation. A leader must be able to leverage more than his own capabilities. He must be capable of inspiring other people to do things without actually sitting on top of them with a checklist.

Going by Sculley’s philosophy , Sen. Goodswill Akpabio, Senator representing the Akwa Ibom Northwest Senatorial district at the upper chambers has not only inspired the members of his senatorial district but has exemplified the products of those inspirations. Thereby buttressing the points made by a philosophical stalwart, Peter Drucker who rightly perceived leadership as the lifting of a man’s vision to higher sights, the raising of a man’s performance to a higher standard, the building of a man’s personality beyond its normal limitations.

Suffice it therefore to say that senator Akpabio remains a Godsent servant to his people as well as the whole nation. Since it will serve no useful purpose going back to recount on the numerous projects he started and completed as a serving governor to the state, let us take a cursory look at the newest projects which he has embarked and is still embarking upon.

Among the numerous projects commissioned by the people’s senator are: Open store at the Timber Market, Utu Edem Usung, Solar Powered borehole project at Ibiakpan Ikot Ekere both in Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. Another solar water borehole with one kilometer radius reticulation at Mbiaobong Ikon village, open market stores at Obo market, Oduk all in Ikono Local Government Area of the state. At Ini Local Government Area, the working Senator also inaugurated open market stores at Urua Ofiongaran . In Abak LGA, Sen. Akpabio Commissioned another open stores market at Urua Akpan Ibom, Midim and two solar powered borehole water projects at Ebibit Afaha Obong and Ikot Akpan Idem respectively.

These projects as a matter of fact will go a long way to raise the standard of living of the people in the areas and as well attract other developmental projects.

Market men and women have since the kick off of the projects been raining praises on the senator for this great height achieved by him. It is by this wonderful gesture that senator Akpabio proved the assertion by Edward L.Flom that One of the hardest tasks of leadership is understanding that you are not what you are, but what you're perceived to be by others.

Going by this, it therefore be rightly stated here that he doesn’t need much campaign since his laudable projects are already speaking for him. It’s heartwarming to see how people, old and young alike are ready to fight for him based on the indelible imprint he left on their hearts. This singular act has also verified the fact that leadership is a virtue.

Since, according to the great scholar, Ralph Nadar, the function of leadership is to produce more leaders, not more followers, senator Akpabio, the peoples senator has also built many schools in his quest to raise refined leaders of tomorrow. Among such schools are several classroom blocks at Ibiaku Ntok Okpo government school and four classroom blocks at Ukwuok government school, to mention but a few.

No one should however be surprised by the cheerful resolve by his constituents to support him to any political level of his choice because of these uncommon performance exhibited by the senator. This agreement was unanimously reached by the people during the flag off of the Cassava/Oil Palm Processing Training Empowerment Programme at Ikot Ekpene in the month of December 2017.

Because he works in concordance with Adeoye Mayowa’s philosophy that Leadership is the ability to evaluate or forecast a long term plan or policy and influence the followers towards the achievement of the said strategy, he has empowered women in the district with issuance grants and other related incentives. On October 22, 2018 he issued out grant of 250, 000 naira each to over 450 small and medium scale business owners in Ikot Ekpene which amounted to not less than 150million naira.

Among other infrastructural works executed by senator Akpabio are the roads in Ika and Oruk Anam LGA areas Ikot Akpan Idem respectively.

Meanwhile it will be finally established here that Senator Akpabio has fulfilled the four cardinal virtues of a leader according the Platonic philosophy which includes: Prudence (as Wisdom), Justice (as fairness),Temperance (as moderation, or restraints) and Courage (fortitude or resilience).
